The spotlight this lunchtime is on technological advances in ophthalmology, and there are many of them...
But this progress comes at a price. Marie-Pierre Samitier and Pierre Le Baud, Watch.

It was a private clinic that Elisabeth Martins chose for her myopia operation, which is considered a defect and not a disease.
She wanted to get rid of glasses and contact lenses.
Elisabeth: ‘It's getting tiresome, with the pollution, putting up with contact lenses all day, it's tiring, and now I'll be free. When I wake up in the morning, I'll be able to see the time on my alarm clock without wearing glasses.
The surgeon: You're going to stare at the green dot that's right in front of you...
A few moments later, the surgeon prepares for the operation with a laser that passes directly through the cornea, without incising the eye. A contactless technology, 23 seconds for each eye to correct myopia.
- The surgeon: That's it. Did you feel anything?
- Elisabeth: Nothing at all.

The surgeon: So in terms of safety, we have maximum safety because there is no flap, no cutting of the eye. On the other hand, recovery takes a little longer and there is some pain on the first night, so we'll give him painkillers.

A few moments later, she puts away her glasses.
Elisabeth: I don't need them anymore, I think I'll donate them. I'll drop them off at the optician's.

Cost of the surgery for both eyes: 2000 Euros. 50% is covered by her health insurance.
The surgery has become common, with 150,000 people having it done each year. It's both common and expected.
– It's a new life!
– Elisabeth: Yes, for a few years, anyway.
